**Louise Nichols checked out Jolicure (by the lakes) Wednesday to find things fairly quiet except for the usual birds present -- Black-capped Chickadees, Red-breasted Nuthatches and Golden-crowned Kinglets. She discovered that High Marsh Rd. was plowed after the last storm and so was able to drive across it as it was clear except for occasional icy sections. She saw several Rough-legged Hawks and was able to get a photo of one that was perched characteristically on a small branch at the top of a spruce tree. (Editors note: the Rough-legged Hawk is noted for its habit of perching on surprisingly small branches. I can’t help but wonder if it gets this ability as it breeds where trees don’t get very large).
**After sitting in on the owl
presentation last evening Grant Ramsey sends a photo of a Short-Eared
Owl he was fortunate to document on an adventure Magda and Grant had a few
years ago on the Galapagos.
It
demonstrates the broad range of this species.
**Lois Budd was surprised when looking out her window Wednesday afternoon
to see a Red Squirrel enjoying her rose hips. Lois comments Nature seems
to be full of surprises for her this winter as she does not recall ever seeing Red
Squirrels foraging on rosehips before.
