**Louise Nichols went out to Midgic on Monday and
followed the NB Trail in that area. She enjoyed the mild weather and
quiet of the trail although more sun would have been welcome. She saw the
usual variety of winter birds, including some American Robins in a
field, but the highlight birds were a number of Canada Jays and Pine
Siskin. The Siskin were quite vocal, making it sound like spring.
(Editor's note: it is been very pleasant to note the number of Canada Jays observed in the past weeks. It would be expected this species is on territory and nesting this time of year).
**A male Purple Finch has been enjoying the Mountain Ash berries Jane LeBlanc put out in her St. Martins yard. A White- throated Sparrow ate some as well, but Jane was not fast enough to get a photo. Jane also saw a Ruffed Grouse on her driveway Monday morning. Unfortunately, the grouse had hit the side of their house twice and perished. They placed it out on the marsh for the eagles/crows/ coyotes, etc. to recycle.
**Like others, I assume, I have been hearing Black-capped Chickadees making their
seasonal ‘cheeseburger ‘calls which leaves the pleasant feelings of things to
come. Official spring is now one month away, and the blackbirds will be
arriving next month!
I also
heard a cock Ring-necked Pheasant vocalizing loudly near our very urban yard on
Monday morning but did not see it.
