**Gordon
Rattray reports that the activity at his Weldon feeders was very hectic on
Tuesday; snow usually causes the birds to be active. Present at the
feeders and in the yard were American Goldfinch 50, Common Grackles 30, Red-winged
Blackbirds 6, Dark-eyed Juncos 10, Song Sparrows 4, American Tree Sparrow 3,
American Robin 25, Evening Grosbeak 10, also the usual Blue Jays, Black-capped
Chickadees, Downy Woodpeckers and Red-breasted Nuthatches. The yard was a
continuous chorus of different birds. Gordon also visited the Gray Brook Pond,
which is almost completely free of ice and found 50 Canada Geese- mostly
paired, a male Ring-necked Duck, a pair of American Black Ducks, many Mallard
Ducks and 3 Wood Ducks- 1 male and 2 females. Gordon also
checked the wastewater lagoon and found it still ice covered.
**Wendy Sullivan had a female Northern Flicker
visit her Riverview yard for a taste of suet on Tuesday morning to stay for a
few photographs as well.
**Aldo Dorio
photographed a Snowshoe Hare at
Hay Island on Wednesday morning. It was still very much in winter pelage with
little evidence of change to its seasonal brown as yet. A wise decision by the
look of the background in the photo!
Aldo also
got a photo of some of the many Song Sparrows arriving at the moment.
**Pat Gibbs
reports “My unwanted
(but very handsome) visitor is back again for the third time now, a Sharp-shinned
Hawk. Fortunately, its visits have mostly been short and it has taken
only one bird from my yard. I wouldn't begrudge him a starling now and
then, so long as he doesn't take either one of my Blue Jays or one of my
Ring-necked Pheasants.”
**A local firm supplies and installs
bird friendly window applications that is apt to interest members of the
naturalist bird feeder community.
Leigh Eaton
is experiencing a level of window strikes that he finds concerning and has
been looking for a solution and has found a local supplier he suggests.
