**More great photos from Wednesday
night’s Nature Moncton outing!
Gordon Rattray joined the Nature Moncton outing to the
Salisbury wetlands to enjoy the many species present on the well-kept
trail. Gordon as all the participants enjoyed and photographed the American
Coot family; he has included photos of the chicks and mom. Other
birds that Gordon captured were a Yellow Warbler and a young Pied-billed
Grebe, and a Common Loon was heard in the distance. Many plants
were observed, and Gordon includes photos of some including Black Bindweed,
Burr Oak, Sneezeweed, Stinging Nettle, Tall Meadow Rue,
Virginia Rose (wild rose) and Virgin’s Bower – a clematis.
**Fred
Dube photographed an insect in his Lower Coverdale yard that we were unfamiliar
with.
BugGuide
has identified it as the Deer Broad-nosed Weevil (Polydrusus
cervinus).
This is a non-native
introduced weevil from Europe. It is now present in Eastern Canada,
predominantly east of Québec at the moment. It is not problematic at this time but
would seem to have the potential of that. It has no preference as to which
trees they attack, from seedlings to fully mature trees.
