**Louise
Nichols went to look for the American White Pelican in the area of Petit
Barachois where it has been hanging out lately. She got a long-distance
view of it (scope necessary) from Chemin Pointe aux Bouleaux, but then Elaine
Gallant gave her directions to a better spot where she was able to get a closer
view and take some photos. The pelican stood in one spot while Louise
watched, preening for her camera. Louise has seen photos of the bird but,
she comments, the bill looks even bigger in real life!
**Ruth Rogers submits a nice photo of a clump of Turkey
Tail Mushrooms growing in Odell Park in Fredericton. Ruth submitted several
other photos of mushrooms from this rich habitat which could not be identified
with confidence from photos.
It is very helpful when submitting photos of mushrooms
to include several photos of a particular mushroom that shows the upper and
lower surface, the stalk to look for partial or universal veils, what substrate
the mushroom is growing on, and in many cases a spore print is very helpful.
Mushroom appearance can vary considerably from when it first appears to maturity.
The heavy precipitation on Wednesday in New Brunswick
was a ‘mushroom rain’. If some cool nights occur to accompany it, wild
mushrooms should flourish
**Nelson Poirier maintains several Mason Bee
houses at his Miramichi camp. The structures were very busy in May with nests
from the previous spring having adults emerge, gather pollen from earlier
emerging flowers and willows, mate, and very promptly start building new mud
nests in the structures and sealing them off to have the same scenario occur
the next spring.
It was noticed in later June that small Potter Wasps
(photo attached) appeared to be taking over some of the
Mason Bee nests. However, many of the Mason Bee nests were left untouched to make
next spring’s emergence of Mason bees not particularly affected.
**Bob Blake records weather statistics from his
Second North River home including morning low temperatures, daily high
temperatures and monthly precipitation. Bob submits a table comparing those
statistics of August 2021 with August 2022. It can be noted the morning
temperatures for the two months were quite similar; however, the daily highs
showed August of 2022 to be generally higher.
The monthly precipitation for August of 2022 was
noticeably higher; however, 33 mm of that arrived on August 31, 2022. Bob was
away for 5 days in each of these 2 months to make some daily highs and daily
lows missing however monthly precipitation would be accurate and complete for
the month.
