**Leigh Eaton comments on a resident Bald Eagle keeping vigil by Jones Lake that is frequently spotted behind Tim Hortons in a large tree overlooking the lake. Leigh has spotted the eagle on the ice several times over the last few days.
Leigh’s resident Pileated Woodpecker is calling at his home several times daily and is very fond of the ‘Bird Pie’ which is available at Sobeys at a cost of $1.99. Nuthatches, Downy, and Hairy Woodpeckers are also fond of the same pie. (Editor’s note: this bird pie is very popular with my patrons as well and is one item that has not gone up in price over the past year!)
** Jane LeBlanc in St. Martins continues to get 20-30 Evening Grosbeaks daily. She was speaking with a neighbour on Main Street in St. Martins, and he said he lost count at 60. Jane took the attached photo on our one sunny day this week at a neighbour's cedar tree.
They also had the only Red-Bellied Woodpecker found on count day (Dec. 14) and it is still present.
**Aldo Dorio continues to see a small group of Canada Geese at Hay Island looking like they could be New Year’s Day visitors which is getting late even for Canada Geese. Aldo notes that one individual has a damaged wing which may or may not have a bearing on the group staying together.
**The observation tally of the New Brunswick Winter Bird List that runs from December 1/2022 to February 28/2023 is up to 153 as of Wednesday evening. This list is maintained under the watchful eye of Gilles Belliveau.
The yearly average over the years has been 163 however, the tally in the count year of 2017-2018 was 191.
The list will swell much more slowly now but is certain to do so with some interesting observations in the final two months of the count.
