Winter has arrived at that stage in New Brunswick, giving us an early light snow
cover in many areas that is starting to make birdfeeders more attractive to
winter patrons each day. Numbers are swelling and new species are appearing daily.
For Nelson
Poirier, the new Christmas Eve day arrivals were 2 female Red-winged Blackbirds.
We don’t see much of the females all season
with their bright male counterparts seemingly commanding the scene. When we get
the chance to see these females closely at feeders, they are actually very well
dressed and brightly plumaged in their own right, and pleasant to see. Stand back
boys as the gals take the show!
