**This
coming Tuesday night, January 17 is Nature Moncton Member’s Night. This is
an opportunity for members to share special nature moments in 2022 with the
potential to touch on many different subjects which may be sharing your ten
best photos of the year, birdfeeder highlights, special observations, or any
topic you would be willing to share with the group.
The write-up
for the evening is attached below:
NATURE MONCTON MEMBERS' NIGHT
TUESDAY JANUARY 17TH 2023, 7:00 PM
ROTARY PAVILION, MAPLETON PARK
Have you had an
interesting encounter with nature in the past year? Have you taken some
good photos of birds, insects, animals or anything else in the various habitats
of New Brunswick? The January Nature Moncton meeting belongs to members like
you who would like to share their photos and stories of that world in short
15-minute presentations.
If you have something you’d like to share,
contact Fred Richards at fredrichards@rogers.com to put your name on the
program.
Let’s start 2023 off the right way – by sharing
with one another our positive experiences of the natural world around us!
**There have been few reports of Common Redpolls at birdfeeder yards yet; however, this is the time they usually start arriving. Also, the number of Common Redpolls visiting us this winter may not be high.
Bob and
Sharon Blake in Second North River had their first visit from 9 Common Redpolls
on Saturday morning. They were feeding on white millet on the ground.
**Eric Wilson witnessed approximately 200 ducks landing at 3:45pm pre dusk on Thursday in what he presumed is a creek behind the Moncton Best Buy location. Eric was parked at a distance so could not confirm species identity. The constant flow over the 15 minutes he was there was awesome to make it a spot to check out.
Eric had his first-ever visit to his Rural Estates Drive, Moncton feeder yard of a Northern Flicker at one of his 2 elaborate feeder systems.
**Friday the 13th was a great day for backyard
woodpeckers for Jamie Burris in Riverview. He had 2 Hairy Woodpeckers,
male and female, 2 Downy Woodpeckers, male and female, one male Pileated
Woodpecker, and a male Northern Flicker. On Sunday morning the White-breasted
Nuthatch he had been hearing around the yard made a brief appearance.
Jamie also includes a photo of 2 Dark-eyed Juncos that decided to photobomb a pair of House Finch he had been photographing!
**On Friday morning, during the wonderful weather
common to Moncton and N.B. at this time of year, Brian Stone visited Nelson
Poirier and spent some time talking and viewing his back yard birds through the
snow and rain. The birds photographed were female Northern Cardinal,
male and female Downy Woodpeckers, male Hairy Woodpecker, Dark-
Eyed Junco, American Tree Sparrow, White-throated Sparrow, Blue
Jay, female Red-winged Blackbird, and American Goldfinch.
(Editor’s note: note the black border spots on the white
side tailfeathers (arrowed) of the Downy Woodpecker that are not present on the
Hairy Woodpecker).
