** Nelson
Poirier and Brian Stone found a few small groups of Snow Buntings in the
Salisbury area on Sunday afternoon. The largest group seen was comprised of at
least 25 individuals and Brian managed a few distant roadside photos of them. Along
some of the back roads in the area, they also saw some Black-capped
Chickadees and Red-breasted Nuthatches, but not much else.
(Editor’s note: the Snow Buntings were in very
brightly coloured breeding plumage awaiting their migration north to establish
summer housekeeping. They seemed very interested in the few bared roadside
areas and appeared to be picking at seeds of short grasses and possibly
roadside grit. It was interesting to note that the Red-breasted Nuthatch
individuals were very interested in probing the rough bark of mature Jack Pine
trees).
