** The June Beetles are out on schedule.
Aldo Dorio photographed an American Robin enjoying
what would appear to be last season’s delicious larva of a June Beetle becoming
a snack.
**Clarence Cormier reports some new arrivals this week at his Grande-Digue
site that include Veery, Eastern Phoebe and Common Yellowthroat.
Clarence has noticed that only one
pair of Gray Catbirds remain, and they are almost always together. When he sees
one, he usually sees the other one almost immediately. Clarence is trying to
get a photo of them together. They are always around and quite fascinating to
watch.
On one occasion, he heard a
Bobolink vocalizing (sounded like a warbling Bobolink) only to find out through
his binoculars that it was a Gray Catbird vocalizing. He was not expecting
that. And now he questions how many Bobolinks in both fields (front and back) are
actually Gray Catbirds.
(Editor’s note: after hearing
Clarence’s comments and also hearing lots of Gray Catbirds this past week, I
can see how these two could be confused with some of the catbird’s variety of
vocalizations. I suspect the Merlin bird call app could be quite helpful.
Lighting has caused some
distortion of the identity features of Clarence’s photo of a Gray Catbird)
**Dale Pugh has been feeling frustrated lately with the steady traffic of European Starlings devouring everything offered at their feeders -- until Wednesday, when they redeemed themselves a bit by bringing a fledgling along.
(Editor’s note: a great photo! Unfortunately, the starling will be procreating more.)
