**Georges
Brun captured a long-distance photo of the Peregrine Falcon nest box on the
summit of Assumption Place in Moncton that clearly shows a Peregrine Falcon
chick surveying its new territory, and Georges felt quite strongly he could
see another chick behind.
This
is now the twelfth year this nest has produced chicks.
** John Inman
had a female Red-bellied Woodpecker drop
by his Harvey yard for a visit on Saturday. He wonders if it will stay long as he still has too many Blue Jays and the Peregrine Falcons come in daily and usually nab
a Blue Jay or a Rock Dove. John suspects some Blue Jays are still slow to
leave as they are timid to cross the river and the fields.
(Editor’s
note: if memory serves me correctly, most of our overwintering, Red-bellied
Woodpeckers depart in the early spring. It would make one wonder if this
species is expanding its range northward into New Brunswick as has been
predicted.)
**Aldo Dorio had a male Eastern Bluebird check out his Neguac yard a few weeks ago but it didn’t stay. Aldo had another Eastern Bluebird visit him on Saturday, hoping it will stay as it did last year.
**Pat Gibbs
got another photograph of the dramatic difference in the size/age of Canada Goose
goslings, that she has been noting in the marshy area along Amirault St. in
Dieppe.
Harrison’s
nest guide states that the Canada Goose raises one brood per year.
**As a heads up, the June Nature
Moncton meeting write-up is below. This is a live meeting with no Zoom
recording.
Take note of advising Louise Nichols
if you think you may be coming or bringing friends to ensure adequate supplies.
NATURE
MONCTON JUNE MEETING
JUNE 20,
2023, AT 6:30 PM
ROTARY
PAVILION, MAPLETON PARK
END-OF-THE-YEAR
BARBEQUE!
Our June meeting
will be the social event of the year to celebrate a successful
fall/winter/spring of meetings and activities.
Members and non-members are all invited to the Rotary Pavilion at
Mapleton Park where we will serve some delicious beef and veggie hamburgers and
enjoy a picnic outdoors. All food will
be provided as a thank you from the executive for all your help and participation
which has made our club so successful.
After we feast on
hamburgers, we’ll go inside and watch some slides of photos taken by
participants of the Hillsborough warbler excursion held on May 20th
and guided by Gordon Rattray. So if you
were present on that outing, choose your best 10 photos and bring them on a USB
stick. Many birds, plants, and insects
were observed that day, and this will be a chance to look back on it all and
share some great photos with others.
Photos of the group are also welcome, as we had a couple of very special visitors
(Dale Gaskin and David Christie) join us that day.
So we can get an
idea of how much food will be needed, please let Louise Nichols know if you
plan to attend the barbeque at nicholsl@eastlink.ca.
Hope to see you all
there. All are welcome, Nature Moncton
member or not.
