**Jane LeBlanc got a documentary photo of a very ‘on the alert’ Ruffed Grouse as she was driving out her St. Martins driveway Wednesday morning.

**John Inman reports, while in his Harvey yard on Wednesday, he spotted 4 separate Red-tailed Hawks soaring and chasing one another just above the trees. He suspects it must be a good winter for them, maybe due to the warm weather.

**Leigh Eaton is getting rewarding response to bird pie placed just outside his home window. Both Downy Woodpecker and Hairy Woodpeckers are regulars as well as a White-breasted Nuthatch. A pleasant surprise on Wednesday was a male Pileated Woodpecker that was quite content to spend time getting the full meal deal!

Take a look at the action at the attached video link:

(Editor’s note: Sobeys grocery store carries these Maritime-made bird pies in an orange mesh bag. I find them very attractive as well to the species Leigh mentions.  No Pileated Woodpecker yet but on the wish list!)

** The message below came in the Nature Moncton email account from Jenna McDermott.

“The Newfoundland Breeding Bird Atlas is going to be running our free 12-week bird identification webinar series again, and I hoped you might be able to share the information through your channels. It starts with Bird Identification for Beginners next Monday, Jan 22 @ 7pm (AST). I've attached a photo of the schedule, and this link is our facebook post https://www.facebook.com/NLBreedingBirdAtlas/posts/pfbid02g4XSf2snHfcV9jFLziaJhT5dDz5Pg3v6Y9kV4E5Z1estBJGtUUthYVY64ddQAZhul and we have an instagram post (@nlbirdatlas) if that is helpful for you to spread the word. People need to register https://nf.birdatlas.ca/upcoming-events/ for each session in order to get the session link in their email.

(Editor’s note: I listened to these Zoom presentations during the Covid shutdown time and found them incredibly interesting and information-filled and very highly recommend them.

I found the link below the most helpful in getting right to the presentation list:
