Batog is enjoying a Pileated Woodpecker coming to her deck to enjoy her
suet offering and it has no hesitation to do so upside-down. Lucky landlady!
Nelson also shares a few photos of moths showing some visitors with ‘plumages’ to compete with any bird!
The Herald moth flashes its brilliant ochreous
splashes of colour. The literature points out this moth species can hibernate through the cold months in shelter.
The White Underwing moth prefers the cool
temperatures in the fall. This large underwing can be difficult to coax into showing off its underwing designed to scare off predators. A short cooling-off
in a refrigerator lets one separate the underwing away for a photograph before
it flies off satisfied that it has scared off the photographer.
The Large Tolype moth shows off its white fur-like
hairs on its antenna, body, and legs which are heavily barred.
