**On November 1, 2022, Peter and Deana Gadd had a
visit from a White-breasted Nuthatch that stayed at their Miramichi
garden feeders through the winter until early April in 2023. Well, they are
hoping that history will repeat itself as two years to the day, November 1, a
member of that species returned for the first time since. It was elusive and
decided not to visit a feeder although all of its preferred ‘nibbles’ were
available. Only a documentary photo was possible.
More common in southern and western NB, judging by
eBird records, this species does not venture too often to northeastern NB. According to the website “All About Birds”, this is at the extreme northeast
extent of its North American-wide range.
Other visitors to their feeder Friday included a female
Red-winged Blackbird and two males, a Red-breasted Nuthatch, a White-throated
Sparrow, and a nervous male Northern Cardinal that has to wait until the
Blue Jays give way!
(Editor’s note: Note the blooming Witch Hazel shrub
in the background of Jane’s photo.)
