**On
Wednesday, January 8, Marguerite and Bill Winsor went to Grand Manan to
look for the Slaty-backed Gull. After a few hours of looking along
with seven other birders, it was located in the brook at the Seal Cove Wharf.
It was busy bathing itself, so they could see one of its “bubble-gum”
pink legs.
After 10 minutes or so, it took off and landed on the
beach area to the right. This full-body observation made for some very
happy birders!
Marguerite shares four photos.
(Editor’s note: this is a very rare gull to visit New
Brunswick. Its native range is the Pacific coastlines of northeastern Asia.
Three of Marguerite’s photos show the diagnostic “string
of pearls” pattern near the wingtips.)
**There was an error on
yesterday’s edition for the first few hours until noted and removed. The Nature
Moncton January meeting is on Tuesday, January 21, not January 14.
**Jane
LeBlanc sends photos from the last week in her St. Martins yard. She has had Purple
Finches, American Goldfinches, Black-Capped Chickadees, and all the
regulars, plus the Hermit Thrush was back one day for more Mountain Ash
berries. The Black-capped Chickadees are enjoying fresh peanut butter
that she puts out in large conifer tree cones. Also, she has at least two
Golden-crowned Kinglets, but darned if she can get a decent photo of them. She
also has at least two White-Breasted Nuthatches.
