** On Wednesday, Jean Renton had more arrivals at their already busy
Stilesville feeder yard. BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS [Jaseur boréal] arrived to glean
flowering crab apple tree fruit and a flock of PINE SISKINS [Tarin des pins]
appeared.
** Brian Stone got an excellent photo of the crescent MOON beside VENUS
just after sunset on Wednesday evening.
** Brian Stone and I went to see the adult male LARK SPARROW [Bruant à
joues marron] coming to the yard of Jamie Burris in Riverview, on Wednesday. It
arrived on schedule at 4 p.m., as Jamie had said was usually its afternoon
routine. It cooperated for photographs. Apparently this bird was heard singing
on Wednesday morning. Directions are, if crossing the causeway from Moncton,
bear to the right, then immediately left on Buckingham. Go to its end and turn
right on White Pine, taking the first left onto Henderson. Then take Trider
Court off Henderson and, at a sharp turn a path leads to a playground and park.
At the end of that short path, bear left and watch for a sage-coloured house
with feeders in the back yard. Watch through the fence, which makes an excellent
blind. The Lark Sparrow often comes to some blocks with seed on the top, on the
right side of the yard.
** Another heads up for the Nature Moncton WORKSHOP ON TRACKS, TRAILS AND
SCAT, scheduled for Sunday, January 25 from 1:00-4:00 p.m. at the Tankville
School, 1665 Elmwood Drive. Environment Canada is calling for snow Saturday
afternoon and Sunday morning, which hopefully will be just what a track
detective would want and not an overdose.

WHO’S BEEN THERE AND WHO DONE
IT!
The
tracks, trails, and scaTracks, Trails, and Scatts left behind in winter snow can tell us lots about
who’s been there and maybe what they’ve been up to. Looking for animal tracks,
trails, and scats can add a whole new dimension to a winter cross country ski or
snowshoe sortie. Also, just who may have visited your yard last night! Let’s
spend an indoor session with Nelson Poirier looking at tracks, the paws that
made them, and put the two together to know how the behaviour of the animal may
decide the particular trail left. And yes, those telltale scats
too!
To preregister, phone Judi Berry-Steeves at 387-4778 or
email Judi at jbsteeve@nbnet.nb.ca. $8 at the door to cover
costs.
All are welcome.
