** A big thank you to Anne and Paul Vautour for bringing their contagious enthusiasm and vast BEE knowledge to share with Nature Moncton on Tuesday evening. A full house enjoyed every moment that ran out of time with questions on this very interesting and timely subject. Paul and Anne brought along a display hive with its queen. Brian Stone got a photo of the marked red queen being attended by her entourage.
** The question came up at Tuesday nights Nature Moncton's meeting if
anyone had seen a bat this spring. No one had so it was a welcome sight to have
a photo of one arrive from Marla Rossiter that was hanging in the same spot one
was last year at this time. She said it appeared healthy, acted normal and she
comments that she hopes it can echo-locate a mate.
** Peggy Bohus is having a BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE using a pvc tube nest.
Cornell came out with this idea a few years ago. I had some success with black
capped chickadees using them as well.
Peggy's was made from a pvc pipe with a peanut butter cover as a
lid.
** Anne Marsch and Brian Stone were on a butterfly sleuthing trip on Monday
to get several photos including AMERICAN LADY, ARCTIC SKIPPER, SILVERY BLUE,
CLOUDED SULPHUR, CREAMY DUSKY WING, AZURES, WHITE-SPOTTED SABLE MOTH, BALTIMORE
CHECKERSPOT BUTTERFLY CATERPILLAR, and ELM SAWFLY.
Brian also got a photo of an ARCHED HOOK-TIPPED moth recently in Mapleton
Park. Looking The photo will show how it got its name.
** As Roger Leblanc was leaving the Nature Moncton meeting on Tuesday night
he spotted a COMMON NIGHTHAWK working the small stream along the parking lot
edge. Most people had left and missed it. Roger suggests it may be a good spot
to check at approximately 9:30 in the evening at the moment as that may be a
territory one or more may be using to forage insects at dusk.
** Anna Tucker watched a GREAT BLUE HERON and an adult BALD EAGLE both
fishing Halls Creek tide as she watched from the footbridge near Chateau Moncton
on Tuesday at supper time. A great observation post to watch the action.
** Aldo Dorio got a photo of an AMERICAN REDSTART adult male warbler
flaring its tail to show their bright colors as the often do. He also got a
photo of HUMMINGBIRD CLEARWING moth on lilac. These were at Hay Island Nature
Park near Neguac.
