** Carmella Melanson visited a PURPLE MARTIN [Hirondelle noire] colony in
Queenstown, south of Gagetown, on Sunday. The colony is at civic number 4513
Route 102. Albert Chenier, a retired fireman, has developed a starling-resistant
plate that lets the Purple Martins enter the colony’s nest compartments, but
only very small starlings can gain entry. As well, he has a different design of
house with larger compartments plus crescent-shaped entrance holes. The setup
sounds very interesting. A photo shows the entrance hole and the
starling-resistant plate.
** Georges Brun got a photo of a female RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD [Carouge à
épaulettes] on a very successful grocery mission on Saturday, with a beak
full of some choice caterpillars, no doubt heading for hungry teenage beaks.
Georges also noted and photographed an ice-crystal prism forming as it passed
over Riverview on Saturday.
** On Saturday, Brian Stone took a long trek on trails and wood-paths
adjacent to the Irishtown Nature Park and got a variety of observations and
photos. Some plants included COLUMBINE [Ancolie des jardins] and CHIVES
[Ciboulette]. He also got excellent photos for identification of some
butterflies in flight at the moment, several with open and closed wings,
including COMMON RINGLET [Satyre fauve], VICEROY [Vice-roi], SILVERY BLUE [Bleu
argenté], DREAMY DUSKY WING [Hespérie givré], HOBOMOK SKIPPER [Hespérie
hobomok], ARCTIC SKIPPER [Échiquier] and LITTLE WOOD-SATYR [Petit satyre des
bois].
** A photo of the flower of TWISTED-STALK [Streptope] was mentioned
yesterday and not posted. It is attached today, showing the extreme twist in the
flower stalk.
