** Réal Vienneau
had a SPRING PEEPER [Rainette crucifère] visit his front door on Saturday
night. Note, in the photo, that Réal placed it on a .25 coin to show its small
size.
** I was in
the woods on Saturday, in showery, moist weather, and heard the single call
of SPRING PEEPERS [Rainette crucifère] quite frequently. It’s that time of year
when their calls can be heard clearly in woods away from
ponds.
** Underwing moths have a tendency for most of
their members to be seen flying this time of year. They may look very plain
while quietly perched, but when the wings open to flash the hind wings they show
bright colours and patterns. Dave Christie had a ONCE-MARRIED UNDERWING [Likenée
rougeâtre] (Catocala
unijuga) visit his screen door on Friday evening and got a nice open-winged
photo. [Transcriber’s note: That moth flew in when I opened the door and after
posing on the kitchen floor, hid on me till I found and released it this
morning.]
** It’s that time
of year when we see COMMON NIGHTHAWKS [Engoulevent d'Amérique] hawking insects
during the day, as they begin southward migration. While travelling in the
Millville - Nackawic area on Saturday I encountered a group of more than I had
seen at once for many years, estimated at 100-plus, cavorting and diving low
at approximately 5 p.m.
