Sept 1 2015

** It’s that time of year when unexpected bird visitors can start to appear with post-breeding dispersal and seasonal weather systems getting them off course.  Some surprise visitors have already appeared in parts of NS and PEI; so keep an eye out for some unexpected visitors.

** Peter and June Scribner came across a CRAB SPIDER on a garden plant that had captured a BEE (abeille), somewhat larger prey than the spider.  They got a photo of the predator and prey in action.

** A second BLACK-AND-YELLOW ARGIOPE SPIDER {Argiope aurantia) noted.  Wendy Sullivan got a photo of one on Monday near her Woods Beach cottage.

** Brian Stone shares 3 dragonfly species he had not encountered before:  the striking blue SLATY SKIMMER, BLACK-SHOULDERED SPINYLEG, and BAND-WINGED MEADOWHAWK  dragonflies.

** Along the frequently got reported day flying moths earlier was the dark blue-black VIRGINIA  CTENUCHA with its colourful orange yellow head and neck — a relative of this species the YELLOW-COLARED SCAPE MOTH is appearing now.  It looks similar but is smaller, the orange yellow is restricted to the collar,  and the hindwing when seen has near transparent spots in them.  Some photos of one encountered at Escuminiac Point last Saturday are attached.
