Nature Moncton Nature News: Sept 3 2015

**Aldo Dorio got a nice photo of an adult RED-TAILED HAWK [Buse à queue rousse] on Wednesday along Route 8. He also got another SOLITARY SANDPIPER [Chevalier solitaire] at Hay Island Nature Park, this time a juvenile, as well as a nice photo of a LEAST SANDPIPER [Bécasseau minuscule].

** Brian Stone and I made a Sackville area run on Wednesday. A check with the Sackville Water Park had a lot of SANDPIPERS but most appeared to be GREATER YELLOWLEGS [Grand Chevalier] but the visit was short and other species could have been missed.

** A stop at some ponds at the Amherst Waste Water Site had less numbers of shorebirds but more variety. Three bonus birds were juvenile SOLITARY SANDPIPER [Chevalier solitaire], a PECTORAL SANDPIPER [Bécasseau à poitrine cendrée, and a WILSON’S PHALAROPE [Phalarope de Wilson]. This may or may not be the same bird recently spotted at the Sackville Waterfowl Park earlier in the week. Two were well photographed, but the PECTORAL SANDPIPER was only picked up when reviewing photos at home.

** Brian also got a very plump Black and Yellow ARGIOPE SPIDER in his yard before leaving. The late flowering plant, NODDING BURR-MARIGOLD was in peak bloom at both sites and abundant. Brian also got photos of both BAND-WINGED and AUTUMN MEADOWHAWK dragonflies. Note the complete brown legs of the AUTUMN MEADOWHAWK to help in its identification from other MEADOWHAWKS.
