**Dave Miller was out owling on the Buckley Road off Route 112 and
decided to try a MOOSE [Orignal] call. A bull Moose surely answered the call all
right, coming within 50 feet of Dave. Dave promptly felt it best to retreat to
his vehicle, as he wondered if the Moose was not particularly impressed about
being fooled. He did hear three GREAT HORNED OWLS [Grand-duc d'Amérique] and one
BARRED OWL [Chouette rayée] in the same area before daylight, as well as seeing
eight SPRUCE GROUSE [Tétras du Canada] after daylight between 7:30 and 7:45 a.m.
I wonder if this may have been a very successful family unit of the not
frequently encountered Spruce Grouse. Dave was able to get photos of 3 Spruce
Grouse from three different angles, as well as the Moose considering its
options.
**Brian Stone came across a flock of approximately 15-20 AMERICAN
GOLDFINCH [Chardonneret jaune] travelling as groups at this point. They
descended upon a patch of weeds in a feeding frenzy on the fall crop of seeds.
The bright summer plumage of the males is quickly moulting to winter plumage.
Brian also got a photo of a lone RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET.
