** The Nature Moncton Activities Committee has a field trip on for
tomorrow, Saturday October 31st, to the Sackville Waterfowl Park and possibly
the fields behind the Sackville town garage where some interesting shorebird and
duck activity has occurred. Meet at the Sackville Tourist Information Centre at
12:00 noon. High tide is around 3:00 which should increase the chance of
shorebirds coming into the Sackville Waterfowl Park. There's no official guide
for this outing, but Louise Nichols, who knows the Sackville Waterfowl Park,
will be there. On Monday afternoon of this week, there were lots of ducks there,
PIED-BILLED GREBES [Grèbe à bec bigarré] and an AMERICAN COOT [Foulque
d'Amérique] . Shorebirds come and go. No registration is required for this
field trip. Just be at the Sackville Tourist Information Centre by the
Sackville Waterfowl Park at 12:00 noon to join the group. And it's looking like
the weather is going to co-operate nicely.
** Aldo Dorio found three BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS [Jaseur boreal] at Hay Island
Park on Wednesday. That swelled to 60 on Thursday. It sure does suggest we are
in for an excellent winter visit from the species. Note the spruce cones in
they tree where they are perched. There's also a bountiful crop of cones that
may bring in the White-winged Crossbills in numbers as well.
** Brian Stone came across a spider hiding in the corner of his bathroom.
He got photos of it. He identified it as the FUNNEL WEB, a.k.a. GRASS SPIDER,
using the attached URL at Bugguide to identify it.
** Flying insects are in decreased numbers as fall sets in. A moth that
continues to appear at my moth light when it's set up is the FALL CANKERWORM
MOTH [Arpenteuse d'automne]. It's a small to medium-sized moth and its markings
make it quite recognizable.
