** Wendy Sullivan was pleased to welcome a special guest to her Riverview
feeder yard, a male RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER [Pic à ventre roux] on Saturday
morning.
** Jean Paul and Stella LeBlanc advise the female NORTHERN CARDINAL
[Cardinal rouge] is continuing its visit to their Bouctouche feeder yard, but
for brief periods. A COMMON GRACKLE [Quiscale bronze] also dropped by on
Saturday.
** The BOHEMIAN WAXWING [Jaseur boreal] flocks continue to build. Aldo
Dorio got a roosting flock photo on Saturday to nicely show field marks. Aldo
also got a photo of three shorebirds: a DUNLIN [Bécasseau variable], a GREATER
YELLOWLEGS [Grand Chevalier] and an AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER [Pluvier bronze].
The Plover is suspected to be an American Golden Plover vs a Black-bellied
Plover due to an apparent smaller bill and bright supercillium; however, camera
angle can be playing tricks.
** Brian Stone notes the same GREAT BLUE HERON [Grand Héron] is still at
Mapleton Park and appearing to find the fishing excellent. He also spotted a
MUSKRAT [Rat musqué] lodge and a SOLAR HALO WITH SUNDOGS on Saturday. A RED
SQUIRREL [Écureuil roux] has been foraging on Hydrangea seeds and Maple samara
in his yard.
** I saw my first NORTHERN SHRIKE of the season on Saturday on a woods
trail off Shepody Rd. It was first spotted very actively bathing in a puddle
with water flying in all directions. It hopped up to a snag for few quick
photos and off on a mission elsewhere.
