** Jules Cormier from the St Joseph area of Memramcook
checks in. Jules does not have his feeding area fully set up yet, but will
soon. Jules traditionally gets a lot of interesting patrons for the winter.
Jules comments he has had a BALTIMORE
ORIOLE [Oriole de Baltimore] coming to his yard for the past 3 weeks,
where it has been foraging on the berries of English Ivy , and AMERICAN GOLDFINCH [Chardonneret
jaune] are moving in. During the hunting season, Jules comments COYOTE [Coyote] were abundant in the Beaumont area with
the WHITE-TAILED DEER [Cerf de Virginie] numbers down at
least 70%. He’s been seeing SNOW BUNTING [Bruant des
neiges] recently, and BOHEMIAN
WAXWING [Jaseur boréal] starting to arrive.
** To return to
Jules' comments on birds foraging on English Ivy berries. This is a plant I
have no experience with, and was unaware it produces a berry that was attractive
to wildlife. I checked with "Mr Google “ who seemed to give several references
to its value to wildlife including the berries. I would be interested to hear
the experiences of others with English Ivy. I’ll certainly be stopping by
Jules’ yard next time in the Memramcook area to get familiar with this
plant. Regarding Jules comments on White-tailed Deer, my understanding is that
it has been the past few winters of heavy snow that have been very hard on the
White-tailed Deer population as well as the Coyote predation.
