** It's a great time of year to take note of the past summers birds' nests that
are now easily visible in the leafless trees and not significantly damaged by
snow load as yet. Brian Stone shares a photo of such a nest he recently
photographed. Birds are fairly consistent in the places and materials they use
in nest building. Scott Makepeace feels this is a characteristic nest of one of
the VIREOs and suggesting that as the nest is hanging from a forked branch by
the main rim and vireos are the only birds that place their nest like that.
Scott also comments that the materials and shape are all consistent with Vireos
as well. Scott also points out that Flycatcher nests like Alder and Least
Flycatcher are always supported from below and are almost always placed on a
branch crotch, not hanging from it.
