** Larry Sherrard noted a lot of AMERICAN ROBINS [Merle d'Amérique] on the mud flats of the Petitcodiac River in Lower Coverdale recently, and  got a photo of a few. I suspect that they may be interested in Polychaete Worms on the exposed mud flats that would be a very nutritious winter snack.
** It's that interesting time of year again when we can get to see seals on the ice floes off our shores. Louise Nichols was in the Cap Brule area on Wednesday and saw a distant object that looked like a lump of dark ice at first, but a few photos revealed the silhouette of a seal. It's difficult to identify from the documentary photos. It has the shape of a Grey Seal, a species where the females should have already had pups. Some Harp Seals show up at this time of year as well, but they have not pupped as yet.
** Several folks have mentioned how pleased they are with the use of a heated dog water dish as a water source for winter birds. Princess Auto carries them, I think priced under fifteen dollars. They are stainless steel and  apparently clean very easily. Paul Melanson shares a photo of one that he is using, in action on the cool day of Monday. I notice the EUROPEAN STARLING [Étourneau sansonnet] has already taken on the nearly all yellow bill of spring.
A reminder of the Nature Moncton Workshop coming up in a few day. Registering in advance is encouraged. Al details below.
Atlantic Wildlife Institute: Wildlife Response Network
Workshop with Pam Novak and Barry Rothfuss
Saturday Feb 20, 2016

The Atlantic Wildlife Institute, located near Sackville, NB, encourages learning about the vital relationship between people and nature.  The focus of the institute is on hands-on learning and research, rooted in a program of rescue, rehabilitation and release of displaced wildlife.  This workshop will give an overview of the creation of the Network and how it helps determine legitimate wildlife crisis scenarios.  Pam and Barry will give examples of typical calls to the institute about wildlife, AWI response protocols, how they train their 1st responders, and the Do’s and Don’t’s of when to intervene.

Saturday February 20, 1:00 to 4:00 pm
Tankville School,  1665 Elmwood Dr.
Registration with Judi Berry-Steeves at jbsteeve@nbnet.nb.ca or phone Judi at 387-4778.
Cost of workshop is $8 payable at the door .  All are welcome, Nature Moncton member or not.
