** Nice to hear of another NORTHERN CARDINAL [Cardinal
rouge] in Moncton. Howard and Mary Parlee had a male Cardinal pay a visit to
their west end Moncton yard recently. It made only a brief visit, but one is in
the area. If anyone sees it, tell it about the beautiful female on Frampton
Lane.
** The BARROW’S GOLDENEYE [Garrot d'Islande] advance guard
are starting to arrive. Aldo Dorio photographed an adult pair in breeding
plumage off Hay Island on Saturday.
Aldo also got a photo of a RED-BREASTED MERGANSER [Harle
huppé] and a COMMON MERGANSER [Grand Harle] in the same frame, which really
takes a second look to differentiate these two particular birds. They are
immatures, or at least not in breeding plumage yet. I had taken both birds to be
Common Mergansers until consultation noted the difference. Note the Red-breasted
Merganser is smaller and head colour more brownish than the brighter
reddish-brown of the Common Merganser and the much more sharply defined bright
white throat patch of the Common Merganser versus the more subdued white throat
patch of the Red-breasted Merganser.
