** Some action for Jamie Burris in his Riverview yard ... three DARK-EYED
JUNCOS [Junco ardoisé] appeared for their first appearance of the season on
November 24th. On November 27th a male NORTHERN FLICKER [Pic flamboyant] visited
their yard, feeding on grapes. Also on November 27th Karen and Jamie stopped by
Hillsborough's Gray Brook Marsh to note a flock of 15 AMERICAN
WIGEONS [Canard d'Amérique] still present.
Last winter Jamie had a female
MERLIN [Faucon émerillon] that arrived on November 29th of 2016. She stayed all
winter, partaking of the odd Mourning Dove. On November 27th of this year a
female Merlin again arrived to strongly suggest that it just may be the same bird. Jamie sends a photo of
last year's Merlin, as well as the newly arrived one. The local Blue Jays were
not amused with the Merlin's arrival and loudly voiced their displeasure. Jamie
recently found a Blue Jay carcass that was preyed upon that may have put the
Blue Jays on high alert. The Merlin sure can handle large prey for its size.
** Another northern winter visitor arrived at Hay Island
on Wednesday. Aldo Dorio photographed a LONG-TAILED DUCK [Harelde kakawi]
there. I suspect that lots more of its kin will soon be arriving as well.
