**Louise Nichols visited a feeder yard in
the Memramcook area that is still getting EASTERN BLUEBIRDS [Merlebleu de
l'Est] on a daily basis coming to a delicious blend of lard and peanut butter
with cricket powder mixed in. Louise got some awesome photographs of the birds
enjoying their haute cuisine. The Eastern Bluebird is a hardy bird, so it’s not
a big surprise they’re staying around. Most do migrate south all right, but not
far, that being the reason why we sometimes see them arriving back very early
in the spring.
**For some bird feeder yards, AMERICAN
TREE SPARROWS [Bruant hudsonien] have been notably lower in number than usual,
possibly still using wild food sources. Daryl Doucet was quite content to have
his first American Tree Sparrow show up on Thursday. However, Daryl lives near
Mapleton Park, so maybe they are foraging there.
**In follow-up to a suggestion by Jim
Wilson, Jamie Burris and I erected 8 Nature Moncton Swallow [Hirondelle] boxes
in strategic areas in the Riverview area on Friday, where the two CAROLINA
WRENS [Troglodyte de Caroline] seem to be circulating a wide territory sampling
feeder yards that have put out suet blends. We heard the male very loudly
singing but it promptly stopped when we tried to audiotape it. Many have
reported hearing them loudly vocalizing, assumedly mostly the loud male, as
well as a much less boisterous assumed female. I’m attaching a few photos of
the house-raising effort, and would very much recommend Jamie Burris as a
helper – in fact, he did most of the real work!. All thanks to Fred (“The
Builder”) Richards who built the nest boxes.
**Bob Blake maintains daily records on
morning temperatures, daily high temperatures, and monthly precipitation from
his Second North River home. Bob forwards a table comparing January 2019 with
January 2020. There was a lot more snow on the ground in 2019, but temperatures
seem similar. Note the precipitation of 106 for 2019 versus 68 for 2020. Winter
has been kind to us so far, but there could be surprises yet to take place.
Bob’s table as he sent it is attached below.
