** Susan and Fred Richards spotted a duo of RUFFED GROUSE [Gélinotte huppée] in a tree near their Taylor village home.  They have heard drumming, but never actually saw them until Saturday when they flew from the ground into a tree.

** Roger Leblanc reports that the Moncton Christmas Bird Count tally is still trickling in.  Paul Minnaar sends a photo of a NORTHERN GOSHAWK [Autour des palombes] he got on Dec. 16th to make it into count week – and also a few EVENING GROSBEAKS [Gros-bec errant] seeming to be discussing New Year’s Eve plans.  Note the very broad white supercilium in Paul’s photo of the Northern Goshawk, a signature field mark for this species.

** Andy Stultz in Bonshaw, PEI had the same thing occur as Brian Stone reported yesterday when bringing a Balsam Christmas tree into the warm home environment to have it send up these beautiful green cones to make for some unique natural ornaments.  It is normal for Balsam Fir cones to grow upwards whereas spruce cones hang down.
