**Aldo Dorio photographed some COMMON
REDPOLL [Sizerin flammé] enjoying Grey
Birch catkins in Neguac on Sunday. Note
how some catkins are nearly completely denuded.
The redpolls especially young-of-the-year females are still quite
dull-plumaged.
I have had one lone Common
Redpoll coming to the feeders, but passed it off as a PINE SISKIN [Tarin des
pins] at first. When they show some breast red-blushes they
can also look like dull male HOUSE FINCH [Roselin familier].
**Brian Stone went for a hike behind Irishtown
Nature Park on Sunday afternoon. He had
a close-up encounter with a NORTHERN SHRIKE [Pie-grièche grise] that hopped from tree to tree but would only allow a
butt-shot photo. He photographed a SUNDOG
that showed up in a thinning cloud that had moved into just the right position
to reflect the sun’s rays. The waxing GIBBOUS
MOON that will be full on December 29th made an appearance over the
trail at 3:21 p.m.
Brian’s Balsam Fir Christmas tree has now
had its artificial decoration removed to leave a colourful display of the
bursting seed cones.
