**Rhonda and Paul Langelaan were sure at the right
place at the right time on Dec 4, 2020 in Fundy National Park at the Kinnie Brook
picnic area to get a special audience with a male BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER. They
first heard his tapping then found him close to the picnic site.
It gave them great views, and in true Black-backed Woodpecker style, it did not
seem bothered by their presence. They were able to capture some great photographs.
**A trio of LONG-TAILED DUCKS have been staying in the
Pointe-du-Chene marina area for a week now. Two of them are in mature winter plumage
for each gender. A 3rd bird chumming with them would appear to be a 1st
winter female bird. The Long-tailed Duck like most other pelagic waterfowl
takes 2 seasons to mature. This bird is suspected to be a female as there is no
pink colouring on the bill as a 1st winter male should have. Ray
Gauvin got nice photos to illustrate that.
** It’s Nature Moncton meeting night
this coming Tuesday night at 7:00. In
keeping with Covid restrictions, this meeting will be virtual. The guest speaker will be David Palmer who has
co-authored the recent and very popular book, The Great Trees of New Brunswick. The link for anyone anywhere to join in will
be published in the BlogSpot soon. The
write-up for the presentation is below.
