** Elaine Gallant reports that she had a female  NORTHERN FLICKER [Pic flamboyant] arrive at her Parlee Beach feeder yard on Monday with a male Northern Flicker  having visited the day before.  Elaine’s Red-bellied Woodpecker continues to be a regular. A nice line up of winter woodpeckers along with the expected regulars.

** Louise Nichols spotted a  RUFFED GROUSE [Gélinotte huppée]  foraging on catkins of a Birch tree at her Sackville yard on Monday morning.  There were 3 of them doing the same later in the day. To update on the female  BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER [Pic à dos noir]  that has been seen coming to a snag in their backyard, Louise saw it on the mornings of Feb 11,  14,  16 - each time staying for approximately 1 hour.  She had not seen it since Feb 16, until it put in another appearance on Wednesday afternoon.

** Rosaire Richard comments his Cocagne feeder yard has had a very lively weekend predominately Redpolls and Siskins COMMON REDPOLL [Sizerin flammé] at 80+ and PINE SISKINS  [Tarin des pins] at 110+.  The male  NORTHERN CARDINAL [Cardinal rouge] that arrived in November continues to be a regular patron.

** An interesting slant to the chatter yesterday on the amount of the red brown in the pelage of the  GRAY SQUIRREL [Ecureuil gris],  Georges Brun comments that he had a Gray Squirrel resident in his small urban forest forest until late fall with a lot of red colour in his pelage however, later in the season, the colour had become much more gray. Fodder for thought that.  David Christie points out that in Banfield’s  book Mammals of Canada, it points out this normal variation for the Grey Squirrel It does take on a thicker winter pelage.
