** Georges Brun spotted a GREAT EGRET [Grande Aigrette] on Saturday evening, in the company of nine GREAT BLUE HERONS [Grand Héron] in the big eastern pond in Riverview, by the Trans Aqua building. The photo is from almost a mile away at the Landing by Chateau Moncton, but is convincing.
** Louise Richard got a nice photo of HEMP NETTLE in bloom. This plant sports a very striking bloom as do so many others ... almost orchid-like.
** Lynda LeClerc had five TREE SWALLOW [Hirondelle bicolore] nestlings successfully fledge from her Moncton yard on Monday. The first two got off awkwardly, to allow a photo, while the last three made clean, inaugural flights. It took from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm for all to leave the box. Lynda said she had noted a third adult helping to feed nestlings over the past ten days.
** Aldo Dorio's pair of EASTERN BLUEBIRDS [Merlebleu de l'Est] continue to feed their nestlings in his Neguac yard, but he suspects they will fledge soon. He got photos of the pair at work on Monday.
** Pat and I visited Hay Island on Monday. A pair of very vocal WILLETS [Chevalier semipalmé] were trying to direct traffic away from their assumed nesting territory. Three SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS [Bécassin roux] were noted, still retaining some breeding plumage colour. Several GREATER YELLOWLEGS [Grand Chevalier] and LESSER YELLOWLEGS [Petit Chevalier] were present, and Pat suspected seeing a LEAST SANDPIPER [Bécasseau minuscule] but it was not present when the camera arrived. SAVANNAH SPARROWS [Bruant des prés] were very evident and vocal. NELSON'S SPARROWS [Bruant de Nelson] were present but not as vocal as on a visit a week ago.
The adult pair of YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS [Pic maculé] continue to enjoy the grape jelly, however on Monday they brought at least two youngsters. The fledged youngster's first post natal plumage surely is very different from their parents. They look like a different species of bird. A few photos are attached.
