** Georges Brun sends a few photos ... one of a seemingly very loaded with fruit HAWTHORNE BUSH and has been noting waterfowl and shorebirds in a pond near the Chartersville Rd.
** Aldo Dorio got a nice close up photo of a RED-EYED VIREO [Viréo aux yeux rouges] on Tuesday as well as a SALT MARSH CATERPILLAR that are in abundance at the moment.
** Anna Tucker got a close up photo of yet another CLOUDED SULPHUR BUTTERFLY [Coliade du trèfle] taking full advantage of the warm days nectaring on one of the many Aster blooms available at the moment.
** Brian Stone has had an interesting scenario recently with Bumblebees. A nest had been built under his deck ( and inside the house cement foundation through a small hole there ) earlier in the season and when he got home recently fifty-plus bees were in his laundry room with some going into the adjacent kitchen. It turned out to be the COMMON EASTERN BUMBLEBEE ( Bombus impatiens) and they apparently came up through small cracks and holes in the laundry room floor, and along gaps in door frames in the room, seemingly planning to fly out to the outside. He has been able to redirect them to the outside ( Note from Brian ... I open the back door and shoo them out several times a day ) and numbers are decreasing slowly inside the house. He is trying his best to get them all out alive as they are so important in their pollination role and are not particularly aggressive as the Bald-faced Hornet would be this time of year.
Brian also found a very small ( 13 mm. ) bee on a flower outside his home, that he photographed, and BugGuide has confirmed it as a LEAF-CUTTER BEE. This is a native New Brunswick bee (solitary) that uses pieces of leaves or flower petals to create a nest where it lays its eggs in cavities. I am attaching a photo of an opened nest that I found in 2008. Brian also photographed yet another bee that BugGuide has identified as a EUROPEAN WOOL-CARDER BEE. We are not sure how common this bee is in New Brunswick.
