** Lois Budd reports that she’s glad to see a RUFFED GROUSE [Gélinotte
huppé] back to enjoy their winter offerings of seeds, highbush cranberries, and
rose hips at their home near Salisbury. Lois says they usually have one each
winter and if the snow gets deep it brings a friend. Otherwise, it’s not a
sharing individual. Lois comments that it never fails to amaze her how thin a
branch these birds can stand on and not even bend it.
** Susan Richards got a photo of a flock of CANADA GEESE [Bernache du
Canada] on the Memramcook River near the reservoir, with a pair of adult BALD
EAGLES [Pygargues à tête blanche] on sentry just up the river. It would seem
apparent what they had in mind.
** After yesterday’s report on WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCHES [Sittelle à
poitrine blanche], maybe there are a few more in the area than we think, or else
they may be getting more common. Rosaire Richard in Cocagne reports he has had
one coming on a daily basis for six weeks now, with a peanut feeder as its
choice menu. Ray Gauvin also reports that he has had White-breasted Nuthatch
around his home for several years but only sees them as singles, mingling mostly
with BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEES [Mésange à tête noire] but more timid. Ray lives in
the Parlee Beach area. There was also another report of one that is coming
regularly to a mid-city area.
