Brian Coyle stepped out his back door on Upper Mountain Rd on Sunday morning to
spot a SNOWSHOE
HARE [Lièvre
d’Amérique] day resting near an outbuilding. It stayed there all day to
head out on its night mission at dusk. The photo nicely shows that only the
tips of the winter snow-shoe hare turned white and dark stays around the ear
edges. Brian also went out snow shoeing in a field across from his home to find
fresh COYOTE tracks and scat in the perfect snow of Monday to look for trails
and scat. Unfortunately his camera failed and was not able to record the
activity.
** Stella and Jean-Paul LeBlanc caught raptor action in their
Bouctouche yard on Sunday when a SHARP-SHINNED
HAWK [Épervier brun] was successful in partaking of a EUROPEAN
STARLING [Étourneau sansonnet] lunch. I suspect many of us would like to
hire the services of that “sharpy".
** Georges Brun spotted 2 sub-adult BALD
EAGLES [Pygargue à tote blanche] flying in and around the mouth of the
Turtle Creek River at the confluence of the Petitcodiac River on Monday
afternoon. A third adult eagle was there and departed for up river.
** There were 20 BOHEMIAN
WAXWINGS [Jaseur boréal] foraging on Crab Apples on the Salisbury Rd
across from the Seventh Day Adventist Church. They may now be starting to move
into the abundant fruit crop waiting for them in town as well as a nod to those
of us who put out fruit feeders in town to get them out.
