** Wondering about identification, Gloria Chase sent some bird photos taken
during the high winds on Friday. It was an EASTERN KINGBIRD [Tyran tritri] but,
surprisingly, the orange patch on the crown was showing in two of her photos. I
don’t recall actually seeing this patch before and assume that the wind may have
lifted the feathers that usually conceal it.
** Aldo Dorio found 5 LEAST SANDPIPERS [Bécasseau minuscule] foraging in
seaweed near Neguac wharf on Saturday. These peeps are on a fuelling stop on
their way to breed far to the north of us.
** Summer bird feeding can be interesting. There seems to be a partial
changing of the guard. We have two male ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS [Cardinal à
poitrine rose] and 4 EVENING GROSBEAKS [Gros-bec errant] that will feed together
at our camp, but there’s still no sign of a female Rose-breasted Grosbeak, which
seems odd. The YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS [Pic maculé] are now starting to scream
if the jelly cups are low.
