** It’s time to watch for warblers on
the move again. Jane LeBlanc got a nice photo of a BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER
[Paruline à gorge noire] with little change from spring plumage, except maybe a
little duller. It is a nice photo that shows the white undertail with dark
terminal side patches. Jane also got photos of “peeps” on the St. Martins
beach, including young of the year of SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS [Bécasseau
semipalmé] and SEMIPALMATED PLOVER [Pluvier semipalmé], and young of the year SANDERLING [Bécasseau
sanderling].
** It is that time of year when the
morning dew makes the intricate design of spider webs a pleasing photographic
target. One was very visible for Jean-Paul LeBlanc on Saturday morning.
** CEDAR WAXWINGS [Jaseur d’Amérique]
tend to be late nesters and we often see the streaked-breast young of the year
well into the fall. Aldo Dorio photographed one at Hay Island, ready to start
life on its own.
** Brian Stone went for a hike to the Gorge
Road COMMON MILKWEED [Herbe à coton] patch behind Crandall University on Sunday
and found lots of insect activity. It’s that time of year to hear tree-crickets
stridulating, and Brian got a video of one in stridulation. It is a BLACK-HORNED TREE CRICKET from the photo and stridulation.
Take a look and listen at the attached site:
He also came across a BANDED ARGIOPE [araignée du genre Argiope]
spider, preying on a grasshopper, and got an excellent video of the spider
quickly working on preparing its prey. He also got a photo of a CROSS SPIDER
(Araneus diadematus); take a look at the attached site: .
Brian also photographed the colourful
WANDERING GLIDER [Pantale flavescente] dragonfly, a SHADOW DARNER [Aeschne des
pénombres] dragonfly -- It is easy to note the walking stick design of the
front line on the thorax --, and a CHERRY-FACED MEADOWHAWK [Sympétrum intime]
is suspected, as a reddish face and saw-toothed pattern on the side of the
abdomen is visible in this hard-to-identify by photos species.
He comments that there was a surprising
number of SULPHURS [coliades] and WHITE [piérides] butterflies about, some
sulphurs being very pale.
** On Sunday, I came across a SOLITARY
SANDPIPER [Chevalier solitaire] just where one would expect this species to be,
in a remote, small woodland pond. The distinct eye-ring and dappled mantle
showed nicely. There were also PAINTED TRILLIUMS [Trille ondulé] showing their bright
red berry.
