**Sarah Chouinard-
Horne shares some photo highlights she
recently got on Grand Manan. She got a rare close up of a BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER
[Paruline à gorge orangée] foraging on the beach that hopped right up to her as
she silently laid on the beach, camera in hand. A BALD EAGLE [Pygargue à tête
blanche] and a BANK SWALLOW [Hirondelle de rivage] were photographed seeming to
be doing synchronized flying at Bankcroft Point. A BARRED OWL co-operated for a
portrait at sunset. There was a pair of BARRED OWL [Chouette rayée] and both
came out to see them so they promptly left to not disturbed the owls.
**We mentioned yesterday White Horse
Island was the most southerly breeding colony of BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE
[Mouette tridactyle] in North America. Jim Edsall corected that in saying that
Pearl Island which is just off Peggy's Cove has a colony and is actually a bit
farther south. I am not sure of the size of that colony.
**Brian Stone got many nice photos at
Mapleton Park on Monday to include an EASTERN PHOEBE. More highlights were his
first dragonfly of the season, a Beaverpond Baskettail and minnows under a
bridge that appeared to be Dace. I'm not sure if they be Black Nosed Dace or a
Red Bellied Dace. A female WOOD DUCK [Canard branchu] was spotted with a very
large entourage of ducklings making one wonder about some dumping of eggs into
the nest by another female which WOOD DUCK [Canard branchu] do. Brian got different
angles of a Common Eastern Bumble Bee, a COMMON YELLOW THROAT[Paruline
masquée], lots of MALLARD [Canard colvert] ducks and ducklings, Nodding
Trilium, Russetf Alder Leaf Beetle and a Northern Spring Azure(Azur
printanier)Butterflies, BELTED KINGFISHER [Martin-pêcheur d'Amérique] and a Black Fly that made the fatal mistake of feeding on Brian.
**I was very pleased to have been able to
attend the Salisbury Naturalist Club double bill meeting of Jim Wilson and
Deborah Carr on Tuesday evening. I have
heard the supposedly same talk from Jim on the MONARCH BUTTERFLY [Monarque] several
times but each time there is a lot of great new add material. I have not heard
Deborah Carr who wrote the book '' The Sanctuary'' on Mary Majka's life before.
She gave a very powerful presentation with so many interesting comments not
only about Mary but Nature in general. Two fantastic speakers with lots of
information and thoughts to take home.
