** Daryl Doucet got an interesting photo of fledgling COMMON GRACKLES [Quiscale bronzé] being fed by a parent. Note the thick, rubbery red commissure of the jaw of the fledglings. This will disappear when they are off on their own. Also note the drab plumage of the youngsters that will tend to stay until fall to confuse birders.

** Aldo Dorio got a photo of a young of the year RED FOX [Renard roux] kit on Monday along with assumedly its mother. The kit looks in great condition, but the assumed mother is lean and rough pelaged. I don’t think it is infected with Sarcoptic Mange or probably the kit would be as well. She has probably attended a large litter but by the size of the kit, her rearing mission must be near complete with more time to attend to herself.

At my own bird feeding area, numbers are down somewhat from the spring rush. Most Purple Finch for off nesting as well is the Ruby-throated Hummingbirds. Woodpeckers are trucking away food continually assumedly to teenage nestlings. American Goldfinch are still patrons as well as some Pine Siskins. Black-capped Chickadees are down again assumedly mostly to nests. I’m going to discontinue using bird pies until winter as they go through them just too fast for budgetary concerns.
