**Louise and
Glen Nichols came across a striking RAGGED FRINGED ORCHID at their Aulac home
on Tuesday. This beautiful orchid will grow 20-80 cm high to be a real
showpiece. Its size and the three parted deeply lacerated blooms make it an
easy one to recognize. It is not a rare orchid, but not commonly encountered.
Its floral parts vary from green to white. The Nichols speciman is the more
showy white one.
**Brian Coyle
checked his trail camera video to get some intersting interaction between a spikehorn
WHITE TAILED DEER and a BOBCAT [Lynx roux]. Brian shares one encounter
between the two. The second video shows the BOBCAT [Lynx roux] hiding in wait
in a dense wooded area (look carefully for it). The third video shows the
BOBCAT [Lynx roux] struting through the area. Take a look at the three attached
links.
All this activity, Brian gets in an area of
fields, some wooded area, and ponds
between the Homestead Road and the Trans Canada Highway. Not a huge track of
land, but lots of wildlife activity. He often gets a COYOTE [Coyote], which
inhabits the same area and relatively close to his home on a road that crosses
between the two highways.
**Yolande LeBlanc's home
in Memramcook looks out over the marsh. She is enjoying watching the antics of three RED FOX [Renard
roux] pups frolicing about right from her window. Yolande
also comments that the MONARCH [Monarque] butterflies have arrived to use her
yard milkweed patch, suspecting there may be several.
**Jamie Burris
got a photo of two Lady Beetles mating, which look like two different species.
They are actually the same species, the MULTI COLOURED ASIAN LADY BEETLE. This
is an introduced species we often see in our homes in late fall and winter.
Native lady beetles would over winter outdoors. Apparently this species is the
most variable of the lady beetle species with nineteen spots being the most
common, but others with only a few spots or none at all. Even the pronotum
seems to differ in the individuals in Jamie's photo, which for most species is
an identity feature. The adult lady beetle will soon be laying eggs and dying.
Then we will be seeing the larval forms and then the adults later in the
season.
**An EASTERN
CHIPMUNK [Suisse] has Daryl Doucet trained to advise it prefers the sunflower
seeds direct from the bag and not the outdoor weathered seeds. The photo shows
Daryl has learned quickly the wants of his patron.
**Brian Stone
and I visited a bog in the Chipman area on Saturday, with the New Brunswick
Botany Club to see lots of plants that choose bog habitat to live. The PITCHER
PLANTS were in bloom and the water pitcher portion of this plant was
encouraging insects to crawl into its uniquely arranged chamber to become
trapped and digested. RUSTY COTTON
GRASS, which is one of the less common cotton grass species, DWARF MISTLETOE
was found infecting some Black Spruce trees, CLUB SPUR ORCHID, WHITE FRINGED
ORCHID and CALAPOGEN aka GRASS PINK were in prime bloom. POD GRASS had gone to
seed showing its rather showy seed packets. A BOG COPPER butterfly got in on
the action. HORNED BLADDER WART was in full bloom and SUN DEW was sporting its
small blooms.
