** The BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO [Coulicou à
bec noir] is not a very commonly observed bird in New Brunswick although it is
a New Brunswick breeding bird. It is a very secretive species and its
vocalization, although distinct, is quite low and sometimes not easily
detected. Evan Smith in Grand Bay-Westfield has been able to photograph a gold
mine of photos to share with the rest of us that probably have not seen the
elusive Black-billed Cuckoo this year. In early July, Evan found an adult
Black-billed Cuckoo in the Wickham area but could not get a photo as is often
the case with this species. Evan went back to the area on July 22 and obviously
the bird had nested in that area and he was able to zoom in photos to get the
adult bird and at least 1 juvenile bird. Thank you Evan for being in the right
place at the right time to share your good fortune!
** John Massey came across a scenario
with ants appearing to attack the base of tomato plants and killing the plants.
John and I have never heard of this scenario before with ants and any comments
would be appreciated.
** Aldo Dorio had a good few days
noting SHORT-TAILED SWALLOWTAIL BUTTERFLIES [Papillon queue-courte] at Hay
Island which is a regular site visit for this species within its worldwide
restricted range. Aldo comments that the sightings have suddenly stopped and he
has not seen any in 3 days. Hopefully this is just a temporary lull in activity
and more will soon appear.
