** Word got out
Monday morning that 9 BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING DUCKS were present at Mr.
McCrea's residence fifteen minutes west of Bathurst. After both missing the one-day wonder Black-bellied Whistling Duck group that showed up last year in
Atholville, Roger LeBlanc and Andrew Darcy decided to go on a mission up north.
Hazen McCrea reports that they have been at his pond for about a week now and
says there has been 9-11 ducks present at different times throughout the week.
He has been feeding them cracked corn which they appear to be enjoying. Birds
seem very tame and well settled in at the pond. Apparently, they are even giving the
local Mallards a run for their money, no doubt not willing to share their newfound
utopia. Thanks to Mr. McCrea for the access and hospitality! This was a lifer
species for Andrew and an NB lifer for Roger! This is only the second New Brunswick
record for this species. There is some speculation that these birds could
indeed be the same group of ten that were hanging out in Nova Scotia a little
over a week ago. There appears to be an odd and fairly unique black lump on one
of the duck’s bills, and there is discussion that this feature could potentially
be used to compare the two groups and see of they are in fact the same birds.
Got two beautiful videos. Check them out at the links below:
