**Jane LeBlanc in St.
Martins had placed 3 Monarch Butterfly chrysalides in her greenhouse for
safe keeping. On Wednesday, after 18 days, she had a lovely male hatch. She set
it out on a Purple Coneflower to dry. Later, it flew clumsily around the yard
and found a higher perch to finish drying its wings. Hopefully it will be
headed for Mexico soon.
Jane also
has at least 2 Ruby-throated Hummingbirds still present, as well as
several young of year Black-throated Green Warblers.
**Larry
Sherrard and Nelson Poirier visited Little Sheephouse Falls in
Northumberland County on Wednesday which is near Mullin Stream Falls which they
recently visited. Little Sheephouse Falls is more narrow than the latter set of
waterfalls but over twice the plunge distance than Mullin Stream Falls. Little
Sheephouse Falls is much more accessible being near a roadway. The stream
enters the Northwest Miramichi River and is listed in Nicholas Guitard’s book Waterfalls
of New Brunswick as highly recommended. Visiting waterfalls is always a
pleasant experience.
Many guides
suggest that any puffball that is homogeneous white when cut is considered a
safe edible. The Pigskin Poison Puffball is almost ‘always’ very
obviously black when cut in section as the attached recent photograph shows.
However, Nelson has noticed some specimens of the species being white when cut
in cross-section to make this white interior feature unreliable. The thick
warty brown skin of this species is a reliable identification feature.
Nelson also photographed a White- marked Tussock Moth. We can expect to see the colourful tufted larval caterpillars of this moth over the next weeks.
