**Tonight,

opportunity for members to share special nature moments in 2022 with the
potential to touch on many different subjects which may be sharing your ten
best photos of the year, birdfeeder highlights, special observations, or any
topic you would be willing to share with the group.
This meeting will take place in-person at the Rotary Pavilion at Mapleton Park.
If you wish to join this meeting via Zoom video link, click on the link below just before 7:00 PM this evening.
The write-up

NATURE MONCTON MEMBERS' NIGHT
TUESDAY JANUARY 17TH 2023, 7:00 PM
ROTARY PAVILION, MAPLETON PARK
Have you had an
interesting encounter with nature in the past year? Have you taken some
good photos of birds, insects, animals or anything else in the various habitats
of New Brunswick? The January Nature Moncton meeting belongs to members like
you who would like to share their photos and stories of that world in short
15-minute presentations.
If you have something you’d like to share,
contact Fred Richards at fredrichards@rogers.com to put your name on the
program.
Let’s start 2023 off the right way – by sharing
with one another our positive experiences of the natural world around us!
**The Barred Owl is the New Brunswick owl species most likely to accept and nest in a man-made nest box.
Scott Makepeace with DNR in Fredericton has had a great deal of experience with erecting Barred Owl nest boxes and closely monitoring them. Scott points out that there are several Barred Owl nest box designs available on the internet with links below:
https://www.owlpages.com/download/Nest_Box_Plans_for_Barred_Owls_by_Michael_Cantwell.pdf
https://www.wildlifecenter.org/sites/default/files/PDFs/Nestbox/BADO%20boxes.pdf
Scott also points
out Barred Owls are not particularly fussy about nest design.
Scott has
very kindly offered 5 constructed nest boxes free of charge to Nature Moncton.
The owls will be vocalizing soon and establishing territories. If you happen to
know of a Barred Owl territory, it would be a good time to erect a box. These
boxes will be in Moncton soon.
If you would
like to reserve one, contact Nelson Poirier at nelsonpoirier435@gmail.com
Am attaching
a photo of a successful Barred Owl nest box Scott erected near our camp as well
as Scott doing measurements in tagging an owlet.
**Nelson
Poirier photographed a White-breasted Nuthatch enjoying peanuts at his
feeder yard on Monday. The reason for attaching the photo is to show the very
black nape and crown of the male. The female would be dark grey in that area.
