**A big
thank you to Gordon Rattray, Louise Nichols, Brian Stone, and Nelson Poirier
who shared experiences in nature in 2023 to make Nature Moncton Member's Night
again a successful and enjoyable evening. Also a special thank you to President
Fred Richards who was able to make the evening available virtually.
**Rhonda and
Paul Langelaan were able to relocate the 2 Black-legged Kittiwakes in the Petit-Cap area that Caroline Arsenault was able to locate on the weekend to get nice
photographs to show their identification features. Rather fortunately, one bird
was a winter adult whereas the other was a juvenile to show the different
plumages.
The juvenile
bird shows the M-shaped black trailing edge of the wing, the black tail band,
the all-black bill, the small black spot behind the eye, and the black (nuchal) collar.
The adult
bird shows the black smudge mark behind the eye, the all-yellow bill that lacks
the red smudge and gonys. In flight, the adult would show only black wingtips (primary
extension).
The Black-legged
Kittiwake is a pelagic gull and would not be expected to be seen in the Petit-Cap area. This species nests in groups on cliff faces and does so in New Brunswick
predominantly on Grand Manan Island and a cliff face at Grand Anse. It can
frequently be seen from the Grand Manan ferry showing its stiff gait flight
pattern. It is in the smaller range of gulls at an average of 17 in.
It is
special to be able to observe this species near shore in Petit-Cap that was
potentially brought there by recent weather systems.
**John Massey has a new window
mount for camera or spotting scope for sale. It was purchased as a gift
from Ivan's camera. It was $59.99 but John will accept any reasonable offer. It
would be useful for those long-range photos. Contact John Massey at johnmassey@bellaliant.net.
It is listed
under Buy and Sell on the www.naturemoncton.com website and photograph is attached.
This site is
available to be used by anyone who has items of interest to naturalists for
sale to be rehomed.
