** Christmas Day afternoon brought a SNOWY OWL [Harfang des neiges] to the
front of the house of Maria Allain who lives on Rte 530 near Cocagne, across
from Joe Casey's Seafood Outlet.
** There is a possibility the BARN OWL [Effraie des clochers] may still be
in the Cocagne/Saint Marcel area. Roger LeBlanc lives near the area, and a
friend who's a non-birder described an owl she saw on Tuesday as very white
underneath with a caramel colour on upper sides of wings and back. Roger showed
her photos of a Short-eared owl and a Barn Owl and she felt the owl she saw to
be more consistent with a Barn Owl. It is therefore very indicated to monitor
fields in that area again for the possibility that it is still in the area. The
potential of a triple whammy for December still may exist for those who missed
the Barn Owl. Roger also advises he still has the VESPER SPARROW [Bruant
vespéral] attending his Notre Dame feeder yard on a regular basis and had a
flock of 20 EVENING GROSBEAKS [Gros-bec errant] visit on Tuesday.
** Louise Richard is noting a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD [Moqueur polyglotte]
around her Jones Lake area home as they did last winter. Last winter there
seemed to be several circulating the west end area. It will be interesting to
see if this winter is a repeat. It can be hard to assess if the same birds are
not moving about the area, but as the season progressed last winter, it was
obvious there were several as they adopted winter territories and the males
started vocalizing in the spring. Louise is also seeing two mature BALD EAGLES
[Pygargue à tête blanche] in trees around Jones Lake. The very significant
accumulation of roosting gulls there may be an attraction.
