**The Shorebirds
[Oiseaux de rivage] at Johnson’s Mills may be increasing in number just in time
for this weekend’s Sandpiper Festival. Kerry-Lee Morris-Cormier reports an
estimated flock of 15,000 were seen on Friday morning.
**Anne Marsch got a
nice photo of a DARK-SPOTTED LOOPER MOTH [Diachrysia aereoides] on her SUNFLOWER
[Tourne-soleil] plants in her Lower Coverdale yard on Thursday. Note the unique
shape of this Moth when perched that is characteristic of several Looper Moth
species.
**Susan Richards is
noting the day-flying dark yet colourful Moth VIRGINIA CTENUCHA [Cténuche de
Virginie] around her Taylor Village home.
**Brian Stone shares
some photos. One is of the very striking Water-lily [Nénuphar], a CANADA DARNER
Dragonfly [Aeschne du Canada] and VARIABLE DANCER Damselfly [Argie
violacée].
**A family of DOWNY
WOODPECKERS [Pic mineur] are coming to our bird feeder. One in particular really
stands out from the rest, as the dorsum of the head is red. This occasionally
happens in juvenile Downy, and I believe the HAIRY WOODPECKER [Pic chevelu] as
well, where a reddish patch can appear on the head dorsum that will disappear
in a near future moult. I understand this is not gender-specific. An assumed
family unit of BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEES [Mésange à tête noire] is keeping the
peanut butter bar in a suet cage very busy the past week, after often seeing
four within the feeder with a few in waiting. Skirmishes arise when the Downy
Woodpecker family decides to join them.
**Just like several
others, I’ve had BLACK SWALLOWTAIL Butterflies [Papillon du céleri] emerging
from chrysalises the past few days. They surely are striking when freshly
minted.
